About Me

Having more than just a mild obsession with Italy, I want to inspire and educate anyone that wants to listen about this wonderful country and how best to enjoy it.

So, where did my obsession begin?  In my early 20's I met my now wife, Francesca (when I say met, we knew of each other from around 10 years earlier)  who as you can probably guess with that name comes from an Italian family.

Italy had always sparked an interest but it was somewhere I had never visited up to this point.  The first draw to it was a sample of its culture, a culture based around family, and families getting together to, 'eat good food, drink good wine and coffee'.

Up until meeting my wife, I was a typical British young man, drinking lager (wine was for posh people) and when I went to a restaurant, regardless of its cuisine I ordered 'Steak', one slight difference was that I didn't drink coffee, I just didn't like it I still don't know how people drink instant coffee) - This continued for a while until the family got it's hands on me and educated me about good food (other than a steak), good wine and of course 'proper' coffee.

Then came my first trip to Italy, one which I will never forget, it was a trip of firsts - the first trip abroad with my wife and her family, which was something in itself that generated many happy memories, my first trip to Italy, first time on an Italian beach, first time in a proper Italian restaurant, first time for proper Italian food (not that the family didn't make great food, but it wasn't from Italy), and my first Caffe Corretto.

I'd like to say that this is where I fell in Love with both my wife and Italy - wouldn't that be romantic, but I'd fell in love with Francesca much earlier than that, almost immediately after our first date.  But, I can say this is where I fell in love with Italy.

The holiday was to Hotel Astor in Viareggio, on the coast just out from Pisa, so of course we done the trip to that not very well known attraction - The Leaning Tower of Pisa and yes we did climb the 296 steps to the top.  The visit to the tower was memorable in more ways than one, not just for the amazement of the structure itself, something where construction started in 1172, or for the fact it was the first Italian attraction I visited with my wife - after the descent from the top of the tower, as soon as I stepped foot out of the opening from the bottom steps a bird decided to unload itself on me and! an hilarious moment for everyone else, not so much for me!!

Since that time I have travelled the length and breadth of Italy (Still many places to visit), taking in everything that it has to offer.  I started this blog to share my interest with you and hopefully give you some inspiration and advice on how best to enjoy Italy.

My dream would be for this blog, and shop (please visit the 'shop' page for some fantastic Italian products) to generate enough income so that I can continue to travel Italy and provide you with useful advice to make your travel experience to Italy better.
